2010 Season

Well, the hunt is on again!! My 1st outing was in Fredericton on 1 May for muskies. 7 hrs and 0 fish. My partner for the day had one follow right to the boat but no hookup. The muskie swiped at the spinnerbait twice during the figure 8!!On Sun, 2 may went out again for muskie. 11 hrs total and again no fish. It took 2 years to get my 1st muskie (42 1/2 x 19" ) and I hope it doesnt take that long to get another one. What I did get is a bad sunburn and a damn cold which has been really hard to shake. I wonder if old age has anything to do with that,ha ha. Well I guess it is better to be a bit over the hill than under it. My next outing was in the Alma area for trout. Caught 5, two got off, 2 were released and one was badly hooked and bleeding. My buddy had him for supper. Went out again the next day to the same lake and caught 1 trout, unfortunately he also became lunch. This year I have a book right beside my PC in which to record all the fish I am going to catch this year. I will close for now with a pic of the St John river on 2 May during the muskie hunt!!

Cassidy Lake -Pickeral Fest

Went to Cassidy Lake on Thurs morn with a new internet fishing buddy. Peter and I arrived at the lake around 10am and it was very flat, and it was a cloudy, humid day. The fish started hitting almost immediatly when we got to the upper end of the lake. We must have caught and released 40 pickeral. What a blast!! They were hitting a J9 and J11 rapalas, silver and black. It was a good introduction for Peter as it was his first time there. It would be nice if all fishing trips produced such excellent results'

Went to the Saint John river on Fri morning. I guess you should never go fishing the day after a pickeral fest. We trolled and casted for about 6 hrs and managed to catch 1 bass and 1 gaspereau. The gaspereau hit a 10" Jake muskie lure and the 14" bass was caught on a jig with adouble tail, white, mister twister. I had a huge bass up to the boat and it got off just as we prepared to net it. Those big ones always get away!!!

French Lake- Pickeral

Took the wife to French Lake for some pickeral fishing on Sunday. I have been there a few times before ,ice fishing and once last year with my bass partner, moe, for picks. He and I only got a few perch near the 2 one-lane bridges. I caught a pic on my 1st cast on Sun on a green topwater while the wife was working on her line knots. I hooked 3 on a frog, and lost them all. It seems really hard to get a good hookset with this frog because of the hook position. I caught several perch and 1 pic on a jointed rapala (J11)which is quite large. The wife caught a couple of pics and perch on a black plastic pre-rigged worm which she had attached behind a double Hildebrand spinner. I am sure if a person fished hard all along the hundreds of weed beds you could fill the boat. I am definately going back for another go!!! There were also several large square nets set up in the area for gasperaux and I heard they catch them by the truckload right now. It was a great day on the water but a little breezy at times, especially in the afternoon.

fishing 2009

This fishing season is not getting off to a good start. Was out again today on Lake Petty. Not a single fish, I am sure the bass are around there somewhere. This was my second trip with a new fishing buddy. If things dont soon start happening, my reputation as a fisherman extraordinaire will be damaged beyond repair. I have made about 6 trips on the Shepody river and got skunked on three of them, entered two bass tournaments and only caught 1 bass total, very dissapointing!!! I guess I will have to sacrifice a virgin to the fish gods or something equally impressive. Well thats enough ranting, I better go get the boat ready for the next trip tomorrow!!!

campfires

Was up to my camp last night for a couple of hours. Had the first campfire of 2009. It was a beautiful evening with no bugs. Didnt do any work yet or anything, just sat on my bus driver seat sipping on a cold beer and watched the fire. Even the dogs were not running around, just laying down watching the fire also. Next week I will go up and take off some winter covers and install the screens and start on some yard work. (i better get my garden in next week also) I plan on staying several nights this year , probably me and the 2 dogs. Didnt get much camptime last year. There just seems to be something special about sitting around a campfire, even if you dont have any weenies!!

My first blog. I am an outdoors person, who enjoys fishing, swimming, hunting, walking my 2 dogs, and spending time at my camp. Fishing is my main hobby as I am retired and have lots of free time. I have a 16' alum boat with a 9.8 hp motor. Would like to have a bigger motor but cant afford one right now. I enjoy fishing competitivly and belong to the NBSFA and Muskies Canada, St John River chapter. I like sharing fishing tales with others and reporting on my activities and experiences.
When spring arrives I like spending time at my camp, sitting around the fire and enjoying a couple of cool ones. My camp is only about 5 km from my house, but its a good spot and you can drive right to it with a truck. It was car accessable, but the heavy rains last year did a lot of damageto the road. I guess this will do for my introductory blog. Casey
